Minister says no RIM factory in M'sia
Communication and Information Technology Minister Tifatul Sembiring says the producers of the BlackBerry smartphone, Research in Motion (RIM), had not built a factory in Malaysia.
"I asked the Canadian Ambassador [to Indonesia] during the Idul Fitri open house on August 31. He said no such plans existed," Tifatul said Wednesday at the Broadband Indonesia Forum.
He added that it was up to RIM whether it wanted to build the plant in Malaysia.
"Investors are free to invest wherever the want," he added, as reported by tempointeraktif.com.
Tifatul further added that it would be acceptable if Indonesian delegates, for example from the Coordinating Economic Ministry or from the Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI), wanted to lobby RIM for investment.
"But make sure we gain profits from them, so it's not just about increasing the portion of foreign ICT company ownership in Indonesia," he said.
